The Math of Birth: Naegele’s Rule
In the US and UK, the standard way to calculate a due date is Naegele’s Rule. This formula assumes a 28-day menstrual cycle and that conception occurred on day 14.
The Formula:
- Take the date of your Last Menstrual Period (LMP).
- Add 7 days.
- Subtract 3 months.
- Add 1 year.
What if I had IVF?
For In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), the calculation is even more precise.
- If you had a 3-day embryo transfer, your due date is 263 days from the transfer date.
- If you had a 5-day embryo transfer, your due date is 261 days from the transfer date.
Your Pregnancy Timeline at a Glance
Your due date is just one point on a much larger journey. Here is what to expect based on your results:
- First Trimester (Weeks 1-12): Focus on prenatal vitamins and your first “dating” ultrasound.
- Second Trimester (Weeks 13-26): The “Quickening”—when you first feel those tiny kicks!
- Third Trimester (Weeks 27-40): Final preparations, nursery setup, and the hospital bag.
