Understanding GPA Scales

On familyhealthcalc.com, we support the most common grading systems used across North America and the UK:

1. The Unweighted 4.0 Scale

This is the standard scale where an ‘A’ is worth 4.0, regardless of the difficulty of the class. It is the most common metric used for college admissions to compare students fairly.

2. Weighted GPA (5.0 Scale)

Many high schools in the US use weighted scales to reward students for taking challenging courses.

  • AP / IB Courses: Often receive an extra 1.0 point (A = 5.0).
  • Honors Courses: Often receive an extra 0.5 point (A = 4.5).

3. College Credit Hours

In higher education, your GPA is “credit-weighted.” A 4-credit Science course impacts your GPA more than a 1-credit Physical Education course.

  • Formula: Σ(Grade Points × Credits) Σ Total Credits

Tips for Boosting Your GPA

  • Focus on Credit-Heavy Classes: Because GPA is weighted by credits, performing well in a 4-credit core subject has a larger impact than an elective.
  • Understand the “W”: Withdrawing from a class early (receiving a ‘W’) usually does not affect your GPA, whereas staying and failing (‘F’) can be devastating to your average.
  • Grade Forgiveness: Check if your school offers “Repeat-to-Replace” policies, where a better second attempt at a course can replace the original low grade in your GPA calculation.
