Understanding Regional Sales Tax
Sales tax isn’t a “one size fits all” percentage. On familyhealthcalc.com, we break down the three most common systems:
1. United States (Sales & Use Tax)
In the US, there is no national sales tax. Instead, taxes are determined by a combination of State, County, and City rates.
- Pro Tip: Five states (Oregon, New Hampshire, Montana, Delaware, and Alaska) have 0% state sales tax.
2. Canada (GST, PST, and HST)
Canada uses a mix of federal and provincial taxes:
- GST (Goods and Services Tax): A 5% federal tax.
- PST (Provincial Sales Tax): Varies by province.
- HST (Harmonized Sales Tax): A combined rate used in provinces like Ontario and Atlantic Canada to simplify the calculation.
3. United Kingdom (VAT)
The UK uses Value Added Tax (VAT). Unlike the US and Canada, the price you see on the shelf in the UK usually already includes VAT.+1
- Standard Rate: 20%
- Reduced Rate: 5% (for some items like home energy)
- Zero Rate: 0% (for most food and children’s clothes)
