How VAT Works

VAT is a “consumption tax” placed on a product whenever value is added at a stage of production and at final sale.

1. Adding VAT

If you are a business owner selling a service, you must add VAT to your base price.

Formula: Net × VAT Rate 100 + 1
Example: A £100 service with 20% VAT becomes £120.

2. Removing VAT (Inclusive to Exclusive)

If you have a receipt and want to know how much tax you paid, you must “back out” the VAT.

Formula: Net = Gross 1 + VAT Rate 100

Example: For a £120 total at 20% VAT, the net is £100, and the VAT paid was £20.

Common VAT Rates

On familyhealthcalc.com, we help you stay current with standard regional rates:

  • United Kingdom: The standard rate is 20%. There is a reduced rate of 5% (e.g., for home energy) and a 0% rate (e.g., most food and children’s clothes).
  • Ireland: The standard rate is 23%, with various reduced rates for hospitality and newspapers.
  • European Union: Rates vary by country, generally ranging between 17% and 27%.
  • Canada (GST/HST): While technically a “Goods and Services Tax,” it operates similarly to VAT with rates between 5% and 15% depending on the province.
